Dita Indah Sari, a 24-year-old Indonesian woman,
led a drive to improve working conditions in her country and to raise the Indonesian
national minimum wage. When she participated in a peaceful demonstration during summer
1996 on behalf of Indonesian workers, government agents attacked and beat her, then
arrested her.
Although she was merely exercising her basic human rights, Dita
Indah Sari was charged with criminal activity under Indonesia's sweeping anti-subversion
law. The court found her guilty, and she is now serving a five-year prison sentence.
