The Panchen Lama, a leading figure of the
Tibetan Buddhist community, has been held in Chinese custody since 1995. You can help
press Chinese authorities to release him.
The Dalai Lama, exiled religious and political
leader of Tibet, recognized a 6-year-old Tibetan boy in May 1995 as the 11th reincarnation
of the Panchen Lama. The Panchen Lama, referred to as "the Precious Great
Scholar" by Tibetan Buddhists, is the second most important religious figure of the
Tibetan Buddhist faith community.
Soon after the Dalai Lama's announcement, Chinese authorities
abducted the boy, Gendun Choekyi Nyima, and chose another young boy as the reincarnated
lama. For over a year, the Chinese Government denied knowledge of Gendun Choekyi Nyima's
whereabouts. Then the Chinese ambassador to the United Nations stated that the boy had
been placed under government protection.
Please write to the Chinese President and request
the immediate and unconditional release of Gendun Choekyi Nyima. Enter your name and
address, and a sample letter will be automatically generated for you addressed to the
Chinese President. You can then copy it into your word processor to send by post or
fax. It costs $0.40 to mail a letter from the United States to China.
