Won't You Defend Human Rights Defenders
For defending democracy and human rights in Nigeria, Dr. Beko Ransome-Kuti was jailed on charges of being an accessory to treason. Your letter can help him regain freedom.

As chairman of the Nigerian Campaign for Democracy, a coalition of groups working to promote democracy and human rights, Dr. Beko Ransome-Kuti was committed to halting human rights abuses in his country. He is a past president of the Nigerian Medical Association and also a leader of Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative, an international organization.

When Dr. Ransome-Kuti peacefully attempted to defend the rights of prisoners convicted in secret treason trials, the Nigerian Government responded by arresting him, convicting him of being an accessory to treason, and sentencing him to 15 years' imprisonment.

Dr. Ransome-Kuti has been jailed since 1995, and he is reportedly in very poor health. He is emaciated and suffering from malaria. Please write to the Chairman of Nigeria's Provisional Ruling Council and request Dr. Ransome-Kuti's immediate and unconditional release. Enter  your name and address and a letter will be generated automatically. You can then copy it into your word processor to send by post or fax.  The cost to mail a letter from the United States to Nigeria is $0.60.
