| When you, a member of your family, or anyone else has
no access to places or services solely because of disabilities, discrimination is
occurring. You can help end such discrimination. Take a walking tour of your neighborhood or local shopping area. Can you find any architectural features, such as stairways but no ramp or elevator access, that would be barriers to persons with disabilities? You may want to take the tour with someone who has disabilities or with a friend willing to try using a cane or a wheelchair. If you identify architectural barriers, note what and where they are. Then call your local mayor's office, ask to speak with someone in charge of insuring full access for persons with disabilities, and describe the barriers you observed. Ask what can be done to eliminate such barriers, and request that action be taken as soon as possible. National Coordinating Committee for UDHR50. |
