PETITION

We, the undersigned, are deeply alarmed at the practices and policies of Taliban authorities against Afghan women and girls, which amount to apartheid based on sex.

We urge the Taliban immediately to allow Afghan women to work outside their homes, to earn wages, and to receive access to the Afghan society's educational, health care, and other resources. We urge the Taliban to respect Afghan women's rights to safety, to public mobility, and to share use of public spaces. We call for an end to forced veiling and the dress code policy imposed on women. We call for respect of the human rights of Afghan women and men, as accorded to them under Islamic and international law.

We call on the United States and other governments, the international community, the United Nations, and multinational corporations to hold the Taliban accountable for respecting the civil, political, and all human rights. We call upon these bodies to withhold official recognition of the Taliban, access to a United Nations seat, donor assistance, and economic transactions, pending Taliban respect of the human rights of Afghan citizens, particularly the rights of women and girls.

We urge the U.S. Congress and other governmental and intergovernmental bodies to provide appropriate development assistance in support of Afghan women's education, skills-building, capacity-building, and health-related programs, as well as other basic needs in civil society.
